Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain is the sole TLD intended for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to purchase john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased third-level domains remained online.
